Phage (Bacteriophage)

A phage, or bacteriophage, is a bacterial-specific virus that infects and replicates inside of a bacterial cell.  A phage infects a bacterial cell with DNA that is housed inside of the phage.  This infection causes the bacterial cell to break down and lyse, ultimately killing it.

The phage engineered here at Sample6 are designed to infect Listeria cells and modify them to produce an enzyme.  The phage lyses (the cell dies) and the enzyme is released, which when combined with the Detection Reagents, produce a small amount of light (RLU - Relative Light Units).  The light is read with the DETECT Reader.
